Dan Lander - Talking to a Loudspeaker

Talking to a Loudspeaker
I found this on ubu.com, I really like it. It uses radio recordings from various radio channels and various times, it uses a lot of repetition which i think works here well (i usually dont like repetition a great deal) and some horrible jarring radio 'skipping' noises. It is quite funny the way the recordings have been edited together. And i particularly like the idea of being able to change the audio balance of the sounds to show differing political views - they mention being able to tune your headphones to the right to hear far right political views and to the left to hear far left political views. I really like this idea.

Last few tweaks :)

We've finally finished our 3 minute audio track

We had a few light tweakings to do once we'd got all our sounds onto our timeline. A few of our sounds weren't quite loud enough when placed next to the other sounds, some of them were loud, here you cans ee how we manipulated the volumes.
This next one is how we attempted to give the maried couple more of a divide within their sense of space by panning, which makes the characters sound like they're sat at opposite sides of the room.

Initial day of editing

Met up with Alex again today to start our editing into timeline. We've got started but there's a long way to go, we definately need to re-do the old sounds i collected, we could do with creating some more varied ones too so that we can layer them all up, it'll definatel improve the overall piece.
Heres a screencap of our editing start:

2nd Tutorial with Debbie

we've been editing our soundtrack and individual sounds all day because we had our second tutorial with Debbie to discuss this 3 minute audio project. Ideally, we were supposed to be playing a roughly edited audio track to her, but we are nowhere near being able to complete our timeline, there are so many missing sound effects that we need. Luckily, not that many people had been able to play their tracks either, which made us feel a little better. We were able to pitch our idea to her (even though its a little to late to change it now) and i was expecting her to still think the concept was fairly dull and uneventful. I was pleasantly surprised though, i think she liked the idea, we were even given a few extra ideas for broadening our range of sounds. Both of us have planned to record more sounds (mostly the ones we lost during my edit fail, but a few additional ones) tomorrow morning individually and then meet up to put all our sounds onto the timeline. Id still like to finish the project by tomorrow evening, but its looking like it may be another last minute finish..

More sounds

Ive recorded some more sounds today, pretty much all the sounds that i'd recorded before (and then lost!) and a few extra things to give the piece a bit more of a sense of space, footsteps and doors opening and closing for instance.

The Archers

As we seem to be creating some kind of slightly suspence-filled drama, I thought id look into the Archers on Radio 4.. Ive listened to a couple of episodes but Ive also searched for it on Youtube and found a really useful clip with their Studio manager Andrew Partington who creates the Spot effects for it.

For some reason, blogger doesnt want to allow me to upload the clip, so the link is below:

The Archers Sound Effects

You can really tell the difference when he plays the clips with and without sound effects, I didnt realise before how much of a difference it makes. I like how he creates sounds from objects completely different to the sound he's making, for instance the pillow that sounds like a bird.

Sound Layering

I like the first little section of this clip, they've layered their sounds which makes it seem more realistic, and they increase the volume of the song which makes the listener feel more involved in the scene, it sounds like we've just walked up to the door of a house-party.
Most of the rest of this piece, i really dont like, im not much of a fan of the narration and i think that a large portion of the successfulness of the use of narration pretty much hinges on what your automatic assumption of the narrator is. I automatically didnt like the guy thatstelling the story so i wasnt particularly interested to listen to the rest.

Dramatic Narrative

Since we seem to be creating a dramatic narrative project now, Ive had another look on youtube for similar ideas.

This piece is fairly similar, however i think with a little more sound layering they could have kept the audiences attention better, we have much less time to tell our story.. around halfway through the piece gets quite dull, especially near the end where there appears to be just a heap of musical 'filler'.

Rough Timeline

Drew up a rough timeline earlier:

More Kitchen Brainstorming

Ive had a little more of a brainstorm on the kitchen front, with Alex's idea of a domestic dispute in mind, it seems to be coming together a little bit. The words ive added are just a few quick ideas as Alex is hopefully going to be creating a script over the weekend.

Binaural Technique

Ive looked into the Binaural Technique today, where when you wear headphones it actually sounds as though you're in the place that the sounds have been recorded, there's a particularly good binaural barbers piece on youtube:

It would've been in interesting way to go with the bus idea had we worked out some kind of way to not record noises we didnt want. Not quite sure how we could incorporate it into our kitchen idea..

Youtube Kitchen Sounds

Ive been on youtube and found some clips relating to kitchen sounds:

This one has a good range of different kitchen sounds, i like how theyve layered the sounds to make a slightly musical track. Its a nice simple idea that might work if either myself or Alex were at all musical. Ive discussed this with Alex and unfortunately we're not, neither of us want to do anything relying on rhythm specifically.. but i have a few extra sound ideas from it.

If we were to do a musical rhythmic theme, lots of people have seen 'Stomp!' so this would be what we'd be competing against.

Another kitchen sounds clip, this one recorded in a more domestic kitchen but again on a layering musical theme. Some more sound ideas again though.

Dan Lander - Failed Suicide

 Failed Suicide (1991)

Since i really liked the artist due to my previous post, i decided to listen to a few more of his tracks, this is one that is quite short (5 minutes rather than almost half an hr as most of them seem to be, which is more relevant to me creating a 3 minute audio clip).
It appears to be an inner monologue of a suicidal man, it contains a lot of really bizarre sounds. I got the impression it was supposed to be set in a mental hospital due to the strange sounds used combined with what seems like quite a bizarre conversation.

Laurie Anderson

This is a collection of songs about the financial crisis in America. Unusual subject matter. I quite like what i have heard from these pieces in the fact that the background noises automatically give you a sense of space, and she has a variety of different 'spaces' that she's in. And i like how she obviously has something shes wanting to say in them, an opinion. However, I doubt i could create anything in any way similar to any of these pieces (particularly as i have no musical background). They also seem like audio poetry, which im also not much of a fan of unless its particularly funny.

Bus Idea

Ive done some quick notes on ideas ive had for the bus idea that Debbie suggested. Theres not much, Im really not sure how to go with this idea. We seem to have less ideas than with the kitchen theme. Hopefully Alex will have some ideas..

Thursday, 24 November 2011

Tutorial with Debbie

Went to a tutorial with Debbie to pitch our ideas so far.
It didn’t go so well, unfortunately it turned out we were the third group in a row to pitch the kitchen idea and she didnt think it was interesting enough, she had a point but I thought we could make something more interesting out of it. Debbie thinks we should try to focus on our bus stop idea but instead try and make the sense of space an actual bus. Im a little concerned that this might be quite difficult to record sounds separately from each other without having other sounds overlapping. Im also unsure how to make it any more interesting than our current kitchen idea. However, Alex likes her idea so we’re going to focus on making the bus idea interesting.

Non-Verbal Narrative

Because so far our project doesnt seem to have any voices or script, Ive been looking on the internet for non-verbal storytelling. Here's a Youtube clip of one I found:

I like that they've been able to tell a story without using verbal communication, however, i got slightly bored halfway through the piece, and as our piece is only a minute shorter than this one, i think we need something more to jazz it up a bit. Im not sure what yet though..

Mics

During our Skills workshop, Darryl showed us a website that has all kinds of info on microphones, it seems pretty useful

Lost Sounds!

O No!

while editing the sounds ive already recorded, Ive somehow managed to lose all but one, not-so-well-recorded kettle boiling sound.
I had all of my sounds on one half hour audio track and was attempting to split them all up to individual short, edited clips so that i could place them all onto our timeline and give us a better idea of which other sounds we still needed to record.
Its somehow managed to save just the boiling kettle when i had intended to save the entire project.
O well, looks like im recording it all again. Thankfully it wasnt something id had to travel far to record..

Sound Test

I did a quick sound test, took out the Marantz 661’s (slightly different to the 660’s we’d used before but pretty close..) so tested this out by getting the key sounds for our sound piece. I intend to place them quickly on a timeline to check how they flow before we decide if we need additional sounds or which of the sounds we’ll actually need. Used an Omni handheld mic, Ill use a rifle mic for most, next time I collect sounds.
Ive actually recorded about half an hour of sounds so not quite sure how ill fit them all in at the moment, ill definately be able to layer some of them.

          Today I collected:
  • Kettle Boiling
  • Kettle pouring
  • Tea stirring
  • Tea slurping
  • Toast popped
  • Spreading butter on toast
  • Toast chewed
  • Fridge opened and closed
  • Cupboards opened and closed
  • Plate put in sink
  • Ambient Fridge noise
  • 2x Clocks ticking
  • Chopping onions
  • Frying onions in pan
  • Cracking an egg in frying pan

Rough Timeline

Wrote an initial timeline

Child of Ardoyne

Another track that we listened to in class yesterday was 'Child of Ardoyne' by Alan Hall. Unfortunately I cant seem to find it online to add it here.
The piece was about the Catholic/Protestant killings in Ireland during the 1970s/80s. It combines news interviews from the time, more recent interviews with people that remember it, and various sound effects of children and passing cars that make it more emotive and give the listener more of a feeling of what it was like to be there.

I like that they included some shocking news recordings fromt he time, for instance the grandmother that shouts and is encouraging her grandchildren to walk past all the chaos, the subject material is shocking and im glad they kept in some slightly shocking material other than just interviews about it because the 'troubling time' was shocking and listeners can often 'switch off' more easily with audio.
I also like how a child reads out some of the names and dates of the children that were killed during the piece, to have a child do it makes it stand out more in the listeners head.

Tunnel Visions

Tunnel Visions by Pejk Malinovski (2001)

I really enjoyed this piece, its a combination of several people being interviewed about their experiences on 'the tube' mixed in with sound effects of tube trains starting and stopping and various other noises associated with the underground. I found it more interesting than the other few sound pieces we'd listened to as it was more comical which drew me into the piece a lot quicker.

Jarmans Garden

Jarman's Garden by Sherre Delys (2000)

I really disliked this piece, Im not sure exactly why, perhaps because there are a lot of windchimes and im not a fan of windchimes, however I found its subject matter really interesting, I looked a little at images of Derek Jarmans garden in Dungeness and it looks like a fascinating place, Id really like to visit it, I like the idea of making art from 'rubbish' found washed up on a beach.
Although i dislike the overall piece, in the second part of it I really like the repetative sound of the waves crashing into the beach, I find it really relaxing, which i imagine is how visiters to the garden and nearby beach feel as they walk through it. I also like how the sounds of the nuclear power station eventually fade in and out of the wave sounds.

Meat Factory Earworms

One of the clips we were shown in class was:

'Meat factory ear worms' by Richie Beirne. (2008)

Its a narrative about the documentary-maker's memory of his work at a slaughter house and the things he would think about to distract himself from the 'killing line'. The 'earworms' he refers to are songs that got stuck in his head and couldnt get rid of.
The piece is a mixture of voice narrative of a young irish guy, atmospheric sound effects such as sharpening knives, moving cattle carcasses, and general factory noises from the slaughter house, and parts of the songs that he would get in his head. The sounds effects are all layered into eachother which makes it more realistic and the listener feels more involved.
I really disliked the piece when i listened to it in class, however Ive listened to it a couple of times once I got home and Im actually starting to like it (..perhaps its insanity setting in..) When he talks about his old girlfriend and the song 'I used to love her' plays in the background, and he sings along, I started to sympathise with him, I can imagine him doing his pretty gruesome job while trying to distract himself from some ex-girlfriend.
He's talking about how it was a bad time in his life and I like it cuts to part of one of his 'earworms', Starry Starry night with "how you suffered for your sanity", it actually plays that line two or three times during his piece so its obviously a reflection of how he felt at the time.
I also like how he starts with "its like riding a bike", you dont expect him to be discussing a slaughter house. He seems to be trying to shock the listener, which i also like, when he says about the sweet smell of the slaughter house and the start of Starry starry night begins, and suddenly its cut to silence and he says "of a backbone being sawed in half", its very jarring.

A Sense of Space

We've been given the brief for our second project, Sense of Space

I came up with some initial ideas, between me and Alex we decided that the kitchen idea was probably the best as it will be easier to record due to being inside and theres not likely to be any other distracting noises that we don’t want to include.

Portrait of place - Finished...Finally

Woop!
We've finished and burned our 3 minute film :D
So glad that's done..

The more we watch it, the more we see huge errors in it, but we think that its probably as good as we're going to get it with the footage we have.
Theres a few jumpy cuts (due to the windy weather) and the POV shots are slightly different colours to the rest (again due to the changing weather conditions between the two shooting days) but we've tweaked (or rather Jess has tweaked) as much as we possibly can without going insane.

Hopefully we'll get some decent marks for it...

Portrait of Place Editing

So we've been editing today. Its been ages since i last did any editing, Id forgotten how long it takes. It doesnt take that long to get the bulk of it done (we cut 30 minutes of rushes down to just over 3 minutes in only a couple of hours) but it takes soooo long to do the final touches! We must've spent at least 6 or 7 hours playing about with the rest of it.

Here's a few screenshots of our edit, incase you're interested..

On the above picture, the left-hand clip is a POV shot from our original shoot on Thurs 27th Oct, the right-hand clip is our second day of shooting (on the following wednesday), the weather on the first day was pretty wet and dark whereas the wednesday shoot was much sunnier and brighter, getting the two shots to match in colour (or at least get close to matching) took a lot of effort.

By the end of the shoot, the wind picked up and was blowing the grass and bushes about (as well as Jess' hair!) which meant when we tried to edit together the two shots above, theres a noticable little jump, we spent quite a while trying to fix it, its very much improved from how it was in the rough edit but unfortunately you notice it.

And finally:
Look who we happened to see while shooting on our second day! He even crouched down on the ground to get out of shot for us at one point..
Jarvis Cocker
Im definately feeling my age now, almost everyone I excitedly mentioned this to, however, didnt have a clue who I was talking about (!) Perhaps its not such a big thing but it made my day anyway..

Domestic

Domestic by Suzi Ewing (2002)

Barry has been made redundant but is too cowardly to tell his wife, in order to keep himself occupied during the day he breaks into peoples homes and tidies them, this gives him a sense of purpose and strength to confront his own situation. He inadvertantly fixes a couples struggling relationship.
I like how his cowardice is highlighted simply with a falling pillow feather in the first scene.
The cheerful music plays whenever Barry has a sense of purpose, it cuts off he's filled with fear at the couple returning and starts back up again just before he gets home.
I like that theres very little dialogue needed in the film and that much of the story is told visually.
I also llove the quirkiness of it all.

Camera Logs - Definately not best practice..

We printed off our camera logs before the day of shooting but due to the weather and having lots of different things on our minds at the time, we completely forgot to fill them in. By the time we came to uploading our rushes into a MAC we'd misplaced them and scrawled rushed camera logs as it captured.
Having the camera/rushes logs helped us imensely when editing (deciding which shots worked best etc), however in future I'll definately remember to write them down on pre-printed logs as we film as it would make things easier still..
He's some of what we actually used:

Get off my land

Get off my land by Douglas Ray (2007)

A short 5minute comedy film about a young couple walking through the countryside, they are confronted by a farmer who's land it is. He tells them its private land and the boyfriend becomes argumentative and attempts to start a fight with the farmer. The farmer turns away and the man assumes he's won the argument but the farmer calmly turns back with a shotgun and agrees to the fight. After shooting them both, the farmer leans into the camera and says "you know what, Ive got a feeling this is a public footpath"
I really like this short, I love how calm the farmer is during all of it and Im very much a fan of dark humour.

2nd day of Shooting

We finished re-shooting our Portrait of Place piece, it seems to have gone quite well, me and Jess both seem pretty pleased with what we've got, it'll all come down to the edit now (fingers crossed theres no exposure issues this time!)

Portrait of Place 2nd Attempt Shot Lists

We decided to stick with the initial plot but change the shots we are going to use.
Shot List:

After discussing with Jess, we decided that some shots wouldn't work with the pace, this is what we came up with:

Shot List

Scene 1 - Edale Road

Shot 1 - Over the shoulder shot of Rambler looking at map. Pan up to follow as she walks down
the road and around a corner.

Shot 2 - Mid shot of Rambler as she walks into frame, and pan to follow as she walks around another corner.

Shot 3 - Mid/Long shot of Rambler as she walks towards camera.

Shot 4 - Close Up shot as she looks uncertain at something off frame. Pan to see a church.

Shot 5 - Back to Mid/Long shot of Rambler as begins to walk towards church, but then walks away. Let her walk off frame.

Scene 2 - Grindsbrook Walk

Shot 6 - Mid shot of Rambler as she walks up to sign.

Shot 7 - Close Up of sign.

Shot 8 - Back to Mid shot as Rambler looks around and walks down the path.

Shot 9 - Long shot as Rambler walks over the bridge, looking behind her and walks past out of frame.

Shot 10 - Long, high angled shot as Rambler walks up the stairs, stops to look around at the top (Mid shot), then pan and follow as she walks/runs down the path and around the corner.

Shot 11 - Mid shot as Rambler walks/runs past camera on/off frame.

Shot 12 - Long, high angled shot as Rambler comes out of woods, over bridge and up the stairs towards camera, while looking behind.

Scene 3 - Secluded Area on Walk

Shot 13 - Long/Mid shot as Rambler looking down into valley, but carries on.

Shot 14 - Long shot as Rambler rounds the corner, comes towards camera, looking around the area. Looks out of frame and runs towards it. Pan to follow as she runs up the hill.

Shot 15 - Long/Mid shot, from a different position, as she runs up the hill, and pan as she drops bag down and starts to dig with hands.

Shot 16- Close Up of Rambler digging a hole, while looking around her. She reaches into her bag and pulls out a gun.

Shot 17 - Extreme Close Up of gun.

Shot 18 - Close Up of Rambler as drops gun in hole and covers back up. Stay on hole as Rambler starts to get up. Pan up to see as the Rambler runs away around a corner.

Treatment for 2nd attempt at Portrait of Place

Jess and I worked out the details of our second attempt at the portrait of place project, she wrote up a treatment for it:

A story of a Rambler, starts with her looking at her map, in full rambling gear including walking stick. She walks down the roads of Edale, trying not to look nervous. She comes across something that makes her stop in her tracks. She's considering whether she dare go in, but decides against it, too risky. She quickly walks past the church, not looking back. She finally finds the beginning of the walk she'd already chosen, Grindsbrook, the sign states. She looks around, starting to get more nervous, now that she's getting closer. She carries on through the walk, across the bridge, up the stairs, all the while looking behind her, making sure no one's following. Making sure she's going the right way she stops for a breather while she takes in her surroundings. On the move again she follows the paved path, stumbling on the way, always looking behind. She's not met anyone yet though, which seems promising. Picking up the pace, she moves on, through woods, over more bridges and rocky stairs. It seems to be completely deserted, so she's looking around for the perfect spot. There's a valley that could be right, but it's too steep to climb down, so she continues along the path. As she rounds the corner, there's a bit of land surrounded by bushes, slightly uphill, it's perfect. She runs towards it, shrugging off the heavy bag and frantically starts to dig, using her bare hands. Judging the hole to be big enough, she grabs the bag and brings it out, the gun. Looking around again to make sure no one's going to catch her in the act, she quickly slings the gun in the hole and covers it, with the dirt, and anything extra she can find for more camouflage. With it finally done, she grabs her bag and quickly runs away, never to be seen in Edale again.

My Beast Friend

My Beast Friend by Ewan Torrance (2009)

This film is very short (only 2 minutes) starring Ed Byrnes. He's trying to get rid of his cat because he has a new girlfriend, he tells his cat (a man in a cat outfit) that he's just trying to tidy up and is sending him away to 'pleasureland' while he does it. Unfortunately the girlfriend arrives early and sees the cat with a note around his neck and she assumes he's saving it from 'monster' owners.
I like that they have a man dressed up as a cat for the shots of dialogue and then cut to a real cat sat in a box when the shot become fromt he point of view of the girlfriend. I also love that the last line is the cat saying "You lying C.." and is cut off by the titles.
Its short and sweet but I like it.

Portrait of Place - A 2nd attempt?

Sooo, we got a chance to look at our rushes from Thursdays shoot today and they're terrible. For a start, the exposure is not good on many of the shots at all and secondly, our main concept (to do sped up Rambler's POV shots for most of the film) just doesnt work. Perhaps if either myself or Jess were better skilled with a camera, or if we were able to use some form of camera grips we might have be able to pull off the effect, unfortunately we had neither.

Back to the drawing board:

So here's a quick storyboard of what we could do instead:

Filming on location in Edale

Major Fail! Two hours into our locartion shoot we decided to check back on our footage to see how the lighting was.. There was nothing recorded (!!!) Aaaargh! So we went back to Dom and Debbie and found out that there had been a head-cleaning issue, the camera hadnt recorded a thing because of this (urgh!) So off we went again with a clean tape and back to re-shoot. Unfortunately some of our shots after this had lighting issues as the weather seemed to be deteriorating. we did our best but much of it, we suspected would be unusable.. perhaps we'll re-shoot next week?

Initial Portrait of Place project ideas

Our (mine and Jess Ingleby's) initial ideas for our 3 minute silent film were to do a Ramblers POV through the winding paths and lanes of Edale. Here are a few things that influenced us on our first initial brief planning session:
We really like this rickety looking bridge, hopefully we'll be able to find it on the shoot.

Our main inspiration for the sped up shots of winding Edale roads

A nice Edale hill with valleys in the background

Edale Valleys

I love this picture, it looks like its in the middle of nowhere, maybe our 'Rambler' could end up here?

Initial Storyboard for Portrait of Place

Our Initial Storyboard for Portrait of Place, Ramblers POV
(because we've not been able to scout any locations, a large bulk of shots arent on it, its mainly the start and end)
We'll have to spend a little while at the start of the day scouting the best locations, though much of it will be on the main route we'll be given by Debbie.
